Automobile Accidents on the Rise

Automobile accidents have greatly increased on Los Angeles freeways and streets according to officials. In fact, according to Francisco Villalobos, an officer who works out of the California Highway Patrol's Transportation Management Center, there were twice as many automobile collisions reported this week as there were last week.

"We do see a lot of solo spinouts, people going over the side of the roads, hitting the guardrails (during the rain)," Villalobos said. "A lot of that is on the onramps and offramps." It is likely that the rain will continue through Sunday. So be careful out there, and remember to slow down.

For tips on driving safely in the rain please visit Auto Safety

Originally posted at InjuryBoard by Rick Patterson

Black Ice is the Cause for Fatal Accident

During this time of year drivers need to be aware of slick roads and black ice. Heather Richie, 26, and her boyfriend Joseph Lee Bekker, were killed in a car accident due to black ice. Their wrecked Ford Explorer was found 24 hours after the accident under an overpass. Police say the two were headed home when their SUV hit black ice, slid across the top of a guardrail and fell off the overpass, plummeting onto railroad track below. Teens walking on the tracks discovered the vehicle the next day. http://www.wtol.com/Global/story.asp?S=7479254

Originally posted at InjuryBoard by Rick Patterson

Kentucky Accidents Claim Thirteen Lives

One would hope at this stage of the game we are all aware of the absolute importance of wearing a seat belt while traveling in a motor vehicle. The difference it makes in an accident cannot be overstated.

According to the Kentucky State Police, thirteen people died in thirteen accidents on roadways in thirteen Kentucky counties last week. Out of the thirteen victims, ten were in cars and four of the ten were not wearing seat belts. It is currently unknown whether the other six were wearing seat belts.

One of the Kentucky fatalities was the result of a motorcycle accident involving a driver without a helmet. A good helmet is never a bad idea when using a motorcycle. Four of the Kentucky accidents involved the use of alcohol. The holiday season is upon us, which means an increase in accidents is to be expected. Be safe out there, and watch out for the other guy.

Addtional information pertaining to automobile accidents

Originally posted at InjuryBoard by Rick Patterson

How to Avoid Car Crashes

Dean Voelker, has an idea. He has worked of that idea for the past 17 years. He feels he has perfected the automobile headlight that will significantly reduce automobile crashes. He has invented and patented a new brake light system that lights up proportionately to how much force the driver is exerting on the brake pedal. "When you step lightly, it lights up only the middle of the light. The harder you press on the brakes, the more the lights light up," Voelker said. "If you skid, the whole light lights up."

Voelker feels strongly about the fact that if we know how much pressure the driver ahead of us is putting on his break we would be less likely to rear-end that driver because we would know how rapidly he is going to break. Another school of thought is: If you stay at least two seconds behind the driver in front of you, you can cover your break on time. Always assume the driver ahead may need to break completely. If he slams on his break while you are at a safe distance behind, if you are still unable to break on time, the light, no matter how lit up, wouldn't have saved you. Just a thought.

Additional information pertaining to automobile accidents

Originally posted at InjuryBoard by Rick Patterson

Teen Driver Safety Week

Most people are concerned about the safety of teen drivers. Beginning on October 15 it is National Teen Driver Safety Week, which is partially backed by State Farm Insurance Company.

The idea is to bring about awareness and to help prevent teen deaths while driving. Parents would be well advised to take part and talk to teens in their household. Remind teens of the repercussions of distractions, i.e., friends in the car, changing radio stations and probably the worst offender - the use of cell phones while driving. In fact, why not ban your teen's use of cell phones altogether while driving. In 2008, laws pertaining to cell phone use while driving are going to change in California, so why not start now. With the exception of driving under the influence, that will probably do more to insure safe driving than any other single change. Safe driving.

For more information on this subject, please refer to the section on Car and Motorcycle Accidents.

Originally posted at InjuryBoard by Rick Patterson

Automobile Accidents, Insurance & The Law

Anyone considering committing auto insurance fraud should really think twice. Clearly, it is wrong on many levels, and the penalties are steeper than many realize. Take, for example, the indictment of Kim Falle, and it was not the only indictment. That particular indictment was announced on Monday in New Hampshire for Falle's part in automobile insurance fraud.

Kim Falle, age 42, was indicted on one count of Insurance Fraud. Falle had an insurance policy with Peerless Insurance Company. However, Falle's husband had a suspended license and was not insurable. Falle told the insurance company that her husband does not drive and would not be driving the insured vehicle. Not only did he drive, but when he was involved in an accident, Falle claimed that she was the driver involved in that accident in order to collect from the insurance company. Falle has now been charged with a Class "A" felony "A Class "A" felony charge carries a maximum penalty of 7½-15 years incarceration and a fine of $4,000 or an amount not to exceed double the amount of property gained in the commission of a felony." Not her proudest moment, no doubt.

For more information on this subject, please refer to our section on Car and Motorcycle Accidents.

Originally posted at InjuryBoard by Rick Patterson

Night Driving & Fatal Car Accidents

More than 4 in 10 fatal car accidents occur at night. When you consider the fact that there is 60 percent less traffic at night than during the daytime, that number becomes even more alarming. It is believed that the reason for this is reduced visual acuity due to the illumination from headlights.

Research is currently being conducted in Europe. Researchers are working on a project known as DRIVSCO. They have developed an electronic system that would improve driving ability at night. The work is being done on real-time vision. A microchip has been developed, which would be installed in a given vehicle making it easier to extract information from cameras such as bends or in the road. According to researcher Eduardo Ros Vidal "the aim of this chip is to support the illumination of the car, which is insufficient for ideal vision." Here's to advanced driving.

Additional information pertaining to automobile and motorcycle accidents

Originally posted at InjuryBoard by Rick Patterson

Auto Crash Involving School Bus

Traffic accidents are never good, but when a school bus is involved it can be particularly awful. So many young children can be exposed to harm. In Greenburgh, New York, one person had to be hospitalized after his vehicle was involved in a head-on collision with a school bus on Route 100C.

Fortuntily, there was only a driver and one student on board the bus at the time of the incident, a 16-year-old Sleepy Hollow High School junior who did not appear to be injured. The other driver did not do as well. He was taken to to Westchester Medical Center.

More informaiton pertaining to automobile and motorcycle accidents.

Originally posted at InjuryBoard by Rick Patterson

Teenage Girl Injured in Car-pedestrian Accident

In Kansas, on Wednesday, a teenage girl was struck by a vehicle while crossing a street during rush hour. "Police Sgt. Steve Thompson said the victim and another female were running south across S.W. 21st Street toward Fairlawn Plaza Shopping Center."

In this particular car-pedestrian accident, one of the two girls waited in the center turn lane for traffic to pass. However, the other girl -the victim- did not, and she was struck by a car traveling east. She was conscious when police arrived at the scene, and miraculously she only suffered abrasions. That was definitely her lucky day.
