At Ridgewood Care Center nursing home in Racine, Wisconsin, an 85-year-old man suffered such terrible damage to his ear that it required 19 stitches to repair his torn ear cartilage. Medical staff said the injuries could have been caused by a fingernail but could not have been self-inflicted. It seems obvious that the perpetrator of the abuse is Amelia J. Clay, 20.

She faces charges of abuse and substantial battery with intent to do bodily harm, carrying a combined maximum penalty of nine years in prison and a $20,000 fine.

During the investigation, two employees said they heard Amelia J. Clay yell at the 85-year-old Alzheimer's patient. Subsequently they heard a struggle. Then they saw that the man, who also suffers from dementia, had blood on his ear. Additionally, they noticed blood on Amelia Clay's hand. Given the fact that the elderly man required 19 stitches, it was a stretch of the imagination, to say the least, for Clay to have made the claim that the man "scratched himself." A preliminary hearing for this case has been scheduled for March 29.
