Recall Announced After Bacteria Found in Vick's Nasal Spray

Procter & Gamble is recalling Vicks Sinex nasal spray in the United States, Britain and Germany after finding it contained bacteria, the company said.

Procter & Gamble said it announced the voluntary recall after finding the bacteria in a small amount of product made at a plant in Germany.

There have been no reports of illness from the bacteria, but it could cause serious infections for people with weakened immune systems or those with chronic lung conditions such as cystic fibrosis, Procter & Gamble said late Thursday.

The bacteria poses little risk to healthy people, the company said.

Cincinnati, Ohio-based Procter & Gamble said it detected the problem during routine quality control at the plant. Analysis so far shows the problem is limited to a single batch of raw material mixture involving three lots of product, which were sold only in the three countries affected by the recall, the company said.

In the United States, the recalled product is Vicks Sinex Vapospray 12-hour Decongestant Ultra Fine Mist with lot number 9239028831.

In Britain, the company is recalling Vicks Sinex Micromist Aqueous Nasal Spray with lot number 9224028832.

In Germany, the recalled product is Wick Sinex Schnupfenspray Dosiersystem with lot number 9224028833.

All recalled products are in the 15-milliliter size.

Lot numbers are listed on the outer carton and the bottle, the company said.

Consumers with the product should discard it, and they may call the company for a replacement coupon or refund, the company said. More information is at the company's Web site, www.pg.com.

Hit-and-run Driver Faces Manslaughter Charges in Death of Disabled Man

A driver who hit a disabled man in Santa Ana will be facing vehicular manslaughter charges now that the victim has died.

Police said Fred Dole had helped a neighbor put up lights on Halloween at his home near Wellington Avenue and Lacy Street. Dole decided to get a better look at their work, so he wheeled himself across the street when a van slammed into him.

Witnesses said the driver stopped briefly and then took off.

Dole was severly injured and taken to a nearby hospital. The 62-year-old never regained consciousness and died this past weekend.

Suspected Hit-and-run Driver Behind Bars After One Victim Dies

A woman suspected in a hit-and-run that left one woman dead and two others injured was behind bars Sunday.

Carol Elena Vega, 29, of Huntington Park, surrendered to Whittier police Saturday and was booked at the Los Angeles Police Department's 77th Street jail.

Vega is believed to have been the driver of a 1993 Chrysler Concorde that fatally struck 19 year old Guadalupe Colmenares, a Mexican citizen.

Her aunt, 37 year old Rita Colmenares, and her 14 year old cousin were also injured in the accident. Rita Colmenares was hospitalized in critical condition. The girl suffered a cut, but no report on her condition was available.

The three women were walking on East Sixth Street near Lorena Street just before 9:00 p.m. Friday when the Chrysler heading east on Sixth Street allegedly ran a red light and hit them in a crosswalk.

Witnesses saw the Chrysler Concorde speeding away from the scene and were able to provide police with a license plate number. Authorities identified the vehicle as belonging to Vega.

Tylenol Voluntarily Recalls Children's and Infant's Tylenol

McNeil Consumer Healthcare (the makers of TYLENOL®) is voluntarily recalling certain lots of Children's and Infants' TYLENOL® liquid products that were manufactured between April, 2008 and June, 2008. All products manufactured met internal specifications. The company is implementing this recall because during this period, an unused portion of one inactive ingredient did not meet all quality standards. As a precautionary measure, it was decided to recall all Children's and Infants' TYLENOL® liquid products listed below, which were made during this time.

Parents and caregivers who have questions or concerns should contact their child's health care provider or our consumer call center at 1-800-962-5357 (available Monday-Friday 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. Eastern Time). Consumers can find the lot numbers on the bottom of the box containing the liquid product and also on the sticker that surrounds the product bottle. The lot numbers of the affected products are listed below.

These actions do not apply to Children's TYLENOL® Meltaways and Junior Strength TYLENOL® Meltaways. The voluntary recall applies only to select lots of Children's and Infants' TYLENOL® liquid products.

Big Rig Overturns, Jams 60 Freeway

An overturned big rig was causing a

tough commute

this morning on the 60 Freeway in Monterey Park.

The rig was blocking most lanes on the westbound 60 near Atlantic Boulevard. Traffic was backed up past the 605 Freeway. The eastbound freeway was also jammed as personnel removed debris.

The truck was not removed until 8 a.m.

Fifth Child Dies in Fresno Police Pursuit

A fifth child has died in that police pursuit near Fresno that ended in a

deadly collision

, officials said today.

The death Sunday of 8-year-old Carlos Eric Salazar brought the death toll to eight in the Tulare County crash. The boy was one of five siblings killed when a motorist fleeing police ran a stop sign and crashed into a pickup truck, killing himself and two male passengers.

The other children in the truck were identified as Jocelyn Salazar, 7, Monique Salazar, 4, Michael Salazar, 3 and Sienna Salazar, 1. The four were thrown from the truck and died at the scene. None of the children was said to have been properly restrained.

CHP Officer Chris Wright said the 2005 Dodge Neon that carried the fleeing suspects had been carjacked. When an officer tried to pull the car over for a traffic infraction Saturday afternoon, the driver led authorities on a chase. The car ran a stop sign and slammed into a 1997 GMC Sierra pickup truck, carrying a couple and their five children. No one in the truck was wearing seat belts.

Carlos Salazar Jr., 29, and Jennifer Salazar, 26, were at a Fresno hospital today with minor to moderate injuries. The crash occurred at the intersection of Avenue 424 and Road 120, about four miles from where a Dinuba, Calif., police officer tried to pull over the suspects.

The motorist allegedly ran a stop sign on East Nebraska Avenue and then sped through a second stop sign, crashing into the pickup truck carrying the family, Wright said. All three men in the car died at the scene, and one was thrown from the car. Authorities have not identified the men.

Tanimura & Antle Expands Lettuce Recall

Tanimura & Antle, Inc. of Salinas, California is expanding the geographic scope of its voluntary recall of bulk and wrapped romaine head lettuce. Although the volume of cases from the single recalled lot has not changed, the company recognizes the possibility that some customers may have distributed the romaine in states beyond the original 29. Therefore, the company is extending the U.S. recall to all 50 states. The recall also includes Puerto Rico and Canada, as initially indicated.

The recall was issued after a random test conducted by the Wisconsin Department of Agriculture tested positive for Salmonella. No illnesses have been linked to the finding and no other products are affected by the recall.

All customers who received the romaine directly from the company were notified on July 21 and advised to discard any existing product, which now is well past its shelf life. Romaine included in the recall was harvested June 25 - July 2. Shelf life of the product typically is 14 – 16 days.

"We very much regret the inconvenience that the recall may have caused our consumers and customers," said Rick Antle, CEO. "Food safety and consumer health are our top priorities."

General Mills Voluntarily Recalls "Nut Lovers" flavor Granola Nut Clusters

General Mills announced today a voluntary recall of a limited quantity of "Nut Lovers" flavor Nature Valley Granola Nut Clusters product containing pecans.

No illnesses have been reported in connection with the "Nut Lovers" Granola Nut Clusters product, and no other types, varieties or flavors of Nature Valley products are being recalled.

This action is being taken as a precaution because pecans received from a supplier and used in the product may be tainted with salmonella. No other types of nuts are impacted, and no other flavors or varieties of Granola Nut Clusters products are involved.

This product is a new bite-size cluster sold in a stand-up bag in grocery stores, convenience stores and vending outlets nationally.

Nature Valley granola bar products are NOT involved, and no other General Mills products are impacted.

Only specific Nut Lovers flavor products with five specific "best if used by dates" are being recalled. The five "best if used by dates" are:

FDA to Consumers; Do Not Use Gel-filled Teethers

Luv N’ Care Ltd. of Monroe, La., is initiating a

nationwide recall

of gel-filled teethers with the brand names “Nuby,” “Cottontails” and “Playschool,” because the liquid inside the gel-filled teethers has been found to contain Bacillus subtilis and Bacillus circulans bacteria in the gel.

Although these bacteria generally do not cause illness in adults, infants and children with weakened immune systems can experience stomach pain, vomiting, diarrhea, and uncommonly more serious disease, if the teether becomes punctured and they ingest the liquid gel.

Consumers who have teethers with the brand names and UPC Codes listed below should immediately stop using them and discard or return them to the place of purchase for a full refund.

Los Angeles Toddler Struck in Hit-and-run

A 17-month-old boy was struck in a hit-and-run on Wednesday as his father pushed him in a stroller across the street in Canoga Park. The toddler was airlifted to Children's Hospital and was in stable condition Wednesday night.

The boy's mother was also crossing the street but was not hit.

According to Los Angeles Fire Department spokesman Devin Gales, the accident occured in the 21100 block of Saticoy Street near Variel Avenue at around 9:05 p.m. The suspect vehicle was described as a black 1990s sedan, said Officer Jason Lee of the Los Angeles Police Department's Media Relations Section.
