Tainted Pet Food or Home Cooked Meals

The pet food recall has been going on for weeks now. Instead of getting better things seem to be getting worse. The recall list is broadening. Most recently, some dry foods for pets, in addition to pet treats, have been added to the ever-increasing list of contaminated foods.

"David York's dog Sophie gobbled down her usual lunch of chicken, broccoli and oat bran flakes Monday. It's a diet his veterinarian recommended because of Sophie's allergies." According to York "She's been eating it for 18 years. "She's pretty good proof of what diet and exercise will do for you. " Many pet owners may well follow suit.

One should exercise caution since it is extremely important to feed your pet balanced meals. However, when the choice is between risking serving your beloved pet contaminated food or missing a few minerals by cooking at home, the choice seems obvious. It would be wise to check with your vet before cooking for your pet. It is also important to realize that there are certain human foods that are really bad for your pet and they can be deadly, i.e., some types of nuts, grapes, raisins, garlic, onions, and chocolate, to mention just a few. Be especially careful with the recipes you get from the internet. Remember, anyone can put a recipe online and call it a receipe for pets. I recently saw more than one recipe for dogs on the internet that included garlic, which is not something you should ever feed your pet. So, get all of the facts before cooking for your pet and good luck.
