From pet food to toothpaste to toys with excessive amounts of lead, the list of recalled products seems endless. In the last 40 years alone "more than 390 million cars and other vehicles have been recalled, as have 46 million tires, 66 million pieces of motor vehicle equipment, and 42 million child safety seats."

China in particular has been in the spotlight due to an excessive amount of recalls that seem to stem from its "relatively rudimentary systems of safeguards, inspections, regulations, and enforcement -- some commentators have called it "the Wild, Wild East"." It can be extremely difficult and costly to properly regulate imported products.

The cost of recalls is enormous and although there is insurance available to companies the out-of- pocket costs means a given company cannot afford to use anything less than all of its efforts to reduce the impact of any recalled product they have produced.
