Rat Poison Found in Tainted Pet Food

With the death and suffering of family pets all across the country, it has finally come to light that Aminopterin, which is used as a rat poison, is present in pet food that was produced by Menu Foods. Although that particular chemical is banned in the United States as an agent to kill rodents, it is used in other countries. The chemical was found at a level of at least 40 parts per million in the samples that were tested.

It is still unknown how the rodent poison got into the pet food. As many as sixty million cans and pouches of pet food, which were sold throughout North America under 95 brand names, were included in the recall last week. "As many as 1,715 pets may have died or suffered serious illness from eating the contaminated pet food, according to a "self-reporting" website run by an Idaho veterinarian, where pet owners checked the food fed to their animals against Menu Foods's recall list. The number includes 845 reports of sick or dead animals as of late Friday morning."
