Pet Food Recall Widens - Cross-Contamination Feared

Once again, the pet food recall has widened. As I am sure you are aware, Menu foods has expanded its recall several times to date. The recent widening of the recall is due to cross-contamination. The products in question were not even supposed to contain wheat gluten. As a result of customer reports regarding the condition of their pets who had ingested the food and subsequent testing, cross-contamination has been revealed.

"Of 700 domestic samples tested, about 400 tested positive for melamine and were traced back to the two Chinese companies -- Binzhou Futian Biology Technology Co. Ltd. and Xuzhou Anying Biologic Technology Development Co. Ltd." Melamine, which is used in plastics and fertilizer, has been found in wheat gluten and rice protein concentrate. The contaminated product was imported from China. To date more than 100 brands of contaminated pet food have been recalled. Many people have lost their pets to horrible deaths.

It has been reported that approximately 8,500 complaints of related pet deaths have been reported to the Food and Drug Administration. However, the agency is still reporting very low number of deaths. They claim that only 16 deaths of cats and dogs have been confirmed.
