Pet owners are at their wit's end. First there was the 95 plus brands of recalled pet food, when samples tested positive for rat poison contamination. Then today, the recall list widened yet again. Now dry food that was thought to be safe was added to the list today.

Consumers concerned about tainted pet food are helping to increase the sales of organic and natural pet food sales according to industry officials and store owners. People are willing to pay more money to keep their pets safe. Particularly when you look at the cost of a combination of cheap pet food and vet bills. "People are extending their food ethic to their whole family, including the pets," said Rickard Werner, director of dry grocery for Wild Oats, based in Boulder, Colo. And so they should. "Debra Tarter's two-year-old boxer, Patchez, is just like a member of the family . . . ." "My children are grown, and Patchez is our baby," said Tarter, 55, of Cincinnati. "We would pay anything to keep her safe."
