Night Driving & Fatal Car Accidents

More than 4 in 10 fatal car accidents occur at night. When you consider the fact that there is 60 percent less traffic at night than during the daytime, that number becomes even more alarming. It is believed that the reason for this is reduced visual acuity due to the illumination from headlights.

Research is currently being conducted in Europe. Researchers are working on a project known as DRIVSCO. They have developed an electronic system that would improve driving ability at night. The work is being done on real-time vision. A microchip has been developed, which would be installed in a given vehicle making it easier to extract information from cameras such as bends or in the road. According to researcher Eduardo Ros Vidal "the aim of this chip is to support the illumination of the car, which is insufficient for ideal vision." Here's to advanced driving.

Additional information pertaining to automobile and motorcycle accidents

Originally posted at InjuryBoard by Rick Patterson

Two Fatal Accidents in Santa Clarita Over Weekend

According to California Highway Patrol, two men were killed in two separate car crashes in the Santa Clarita Valley late Friday and early Saturday.

On Saturday at 3:50 a.m., 55-year-old Robert Doyle, of Saugus, allegedly fell asleep at the wheel and veered his 2003 Ford into the northbound lane of Bouquet Canyon Road just north of Shadow Valley Lane.

Doyle’s Ford collided with another Ford killing the driver, Douglas Albert Rawson, also of Saugus, according to Lt. Brian Elias of Los Angeles County Coroner’s Department. Rawson was not wearing a seatbelt.

No arrest was made and an investigation was ongoing, said CHP Sgt. Rob Lund.

On Friday evening, two hikers discovered an upside down van near Lake Hughes Road and flagged down a passing driver, who called 911, Highway Patrol officials said.

L.A. County Fire rescue units responded and found the body of Francisco Diaz, 63, of South Gate, who had been partially ejected from his car. Diaz was not wearing a seatbelt, the CHP reported.

Diaz had been traveling westbound on Lake Hughes Road east of Ridge Route Road about 11 a.m. Friday when he lost control of his Chevrolet Astro minivan and drove off the road’s edge, according to a CHP news release.

Diaz was on the job at the time delivering payroll for Los Angeles County, said CHP Sgt. Rob Lund.

The cause of the crash was under investigation Saturday.

Motorcycle Crash Injures LAPD Officer on Interstate 5

An LAPD officer was being examined at a hospital today after his department motorcycle struck metal debris on the northbound Golden State (5) Freeway in Sylmar, causing him to lose control and fall.

The accident on the Golden State Freeway just south of the northbound Antelope Valley (14) Freeway occurred about 11:40 p.m. Wednesday, California Highway Patrol Officer Victor Leyva said.

Leyva said the LAPD officer told him he had hit a large piece of metal on the roadway, lost control and fell off the motorcycle.

"He had no noticeable severe injuries; mostly complaints of pain on his right side, his neck and back,'' Leyva said.

Paramedics took the officer to Henry Mayo Newhall Memorial Hospital in Valencia for a full checkup following the crash, Leyva said.

At least two other vehicles sustained flat tires after striking the same metal debris that felled the motor officer, Leyva said, adding that a portion of the northbound 5 was blocked off for more than an hour while it was removed.
Auto Accidents - Number One Killer of Teens(2)

It would probably be safe to say that one of the most exciting times of a teenager's young life it the day they get their license to drive. A close second would probably be the day they get access to a vehicle. At the same time, this may prove to be a very worrysome time for the parents of that teen.

Parents generally realize just how distracted an inexperienced teen can be. While that type of distraction in the past may have amounted to a lesser grade for the teen, with respect to driving, the stakes are much higher. A distraction while driving can prove deadly. The fact of the matter is, teen driving is the No. 1 killer of American teens.

In Illinois lawmakers are considering a proposal that would make the state's teen driver licensing system one of the nation's most stringent. Placing restrictions on teen licenses "is clearly the best policy intervention we have so far to reduce teen driving deaths," said Daniel Keating, who studies adolescent development and the teen brain at the University of Michigan. "It has the biggest bang for the buck."

While it is true that each and every state currently has some type of Graduated Driver Licensing, (GDL), it is also true that the rules vary greatly. It probably goes without saying that in the states with the most stringent rules for teen drivers, fatality rates have declined.

Believe it or not, in many states there has been perceived opposition from parents who don't feel that they have the time to conduct additional driving lessons with their teens and/or they want to be relieved from their current chauffeuring duties. The fact is, effective GDL systems, include lengthy adult-supervised driving practice, restrictions on night driving and limits on the number of teen passengers. Parents should consider getting behind these measures. It may not only protect their teen, but it would protect other innocent drivers who share the road.

Originally posted at InjuryBoard by Rick Patterson

Automobile Accidents on the Rise

Automobile accidents have greatly increased on Los Angeles freeways and streets according to officials. In fact, according to Francisco Villalobos, an officer who works out of the California Highway Patrol's Transportation Management Center, there were twice as many automobile collisions reported this week as there were last week.

"We do see a lot of solo spinouts, people going over the side of the roads, hitting the guardrails (during the rain)," Villalobos said. "A lot of that is on the onramps and offramps." It is likely that the rain will continue through Sunday. So be careful out there, and remember to slow down.

For tips on driving safely in the rain please visit Auto Safety

Originally posted at InjuryBoard by Rick Patterson

Auto Crash Involving School Bus

Traffic accidents are never good, but when a school bus is involved it can be particularly awful. So many young children can be exposed to harm. In Greenburgh, New York, one person had to be hospitalized after his vehicle was involved in a head-on collision with a school bus on Route 100C.

Fortuntily, there was only a driver and one student on board the bus at the time of the incident, a 16-year-old Sleepy Hollow High School junior who did not appear to be injured. The other driver did not do as well. He was taken to to Westchester Medical Center.

More informaiton pertaining to automobile and motorcycle accidents.

Originally posted at InjuryBoard by Rick Patterson

Teenage Girl Injured in Car-pedestrian Accident

In Kansas, on Wednesday, a teenage girl was struck by a vehicle while crossing a street during rush hour. "Police Sgt. Steve Thompson said the victim and another female were running south across S.W. 21st Street toward Fairlawn Plaza Shopping Center."

In this particular car-pedestrian accident, one of the two girls waited in the center turn lane for traffic to pass. However, the other girl -the victim- did not, and she was struck by a car traveling east. She was conscious when police arrived at the scene, and miraculously she only suffered abrasions. That was definitely her lucky day.
