A 2-year-old Long Beach girl is in the hospital being treated for dog bite injuries caused by the family dog on Monday night.

The dog, a cocker spaniel, is now in the custody of Long Beach Animal Control. The animal will be held for 10 days and checked for signs of rabies. If no signs of rabies surface, the dog may be returned to the owner.

At this time, the mother did not request to have the dog returned.

Garlic Bread and Garlic Spread Recalled

Giant Food has issued a product recall on their garlic bread and their garlic spreads. The recall is voluntary.

It appears that there are undeclared products in the Giant brand garlic bread and the spreads, ingredients which could prove problematic to an unsuspecting consumer. In fact, consuming this product could be life threatening. All 16 ounce packages of the bread have been removed from store shelves. Fortunately, no illnesses have been reported to date. For a complete list of the affected products, please see full article.

Dog Attacks Owner's 3-Year-Old Grandson

One would hope that with as much information as there is available regarding dog bites, we would see more caution exercised, particularly when it comes to dogs that are known to be aggressive. Yet, we hear stories such as this one that truly leaves one to wonder "where is the common sense?"

Bobby Day, 41, has several pit bulls. One of which attacked a child not more than two years ago. Mr. Day recently took the same pit bull, with a propensity to bite, around his 3-year-old grandson. The story gets even more unfathomable. His 3-year-old grandson tried to pet the pit bull - either because Mr. Day allowed it, or because he was not supervising his grandchild. The dog, which weighs about 50 pounds, then tore a lump of flesh of the child's face.

The little boy is in stable condition, but is no doubt scarred for life. The local police department in Summitville, Indianapolis is looking into citing the grandfather for having a vicious animal. The dog will be quarantined at a kennel for 14 days as a precaution.

PRECAUTION!! It is ridiculous that this individual is even allowed to own a dog, let alone a pit bull. It is equally ridiculous that he was given the animal back 2 years ago, after the dog bit the first child. Why the dog is simply being quarantined for 14 days as opposed to being euthanized is still another mystery. The worst part is, if the future is any indication of past, sooner rather than later there will be a similar story of another dog attack being reported.

Originally posted at InjuryBoard by Rick Patterson

Preventing & Reporting Elder Abuse

A study that was conducted in 2004 by the Adult Protective Services showed that there was a 19.7-percent increase in the combined total reports of elder and vulnerable adult abuse. For example, in Fauquier County alone, there were 141 cases reported in between June 2006 and May 2007, according to Mittie Wallace who is a program manager for the elderly and disabled for the Fauquier County Department of Social Services.

It seems that many of the reports stem from self neglect such as personal hygiene. However, care giver neglect is also an issue. The Department of Social Services investigates reports. However, if the family of the elderly person does not cooperate with a home investigation, the state can move to gain guardianship of the senior in question. Another problem is, there is also a shortage of beds in nursing homes. The sad truth is that even when there are available beds many who seniors who are referred to nursing homes but who can't afford private facilities are sent to homes in other areas within the state, which further isolates them from their families.

The elderly are an extremely vulnerable part of our society, and they need to be protected by members of their community. According to the Virginia Department of Social Services, some signs of abuse to watch for are:

1)	Dehydration
2)	Malnutrition
3) Scratches
4) Bruises
5)	Forced isolation
6)	Inappropriate language or sexual contact
7)	Anxiety
8)	Depression
9)	Hesitance to communicate

Don't turn a blind eye. Remember, most everyone strives to make it to old age.

Originally posted at InjuryBoard by Rick Patterson

Preventing Auto Crashes Caused by Superspeeders

What do you think of this idea? Drivers who are pulled over for going 75 mph or more on two-lane roads or more than 85 mph on any state road would be forced to pay an additional $200 in fines.

It appears that is what Govenor Sonny Perdue is proposing under legislation being filed Thursday. Not a bad idea. Perdue announced the filing of his "super speeder" legislation at an event promoting motorcycle safety. Perdue estimate that the ligilation could genetate $25 to $30 million each year, which could finance an expanded state trauma system. " There is a clear link between people who cause deadly accidents on the road and the rising strain on our hospital emergency services" Perdue said.

Originally posted at InjuryBoard by Rick Patterson

Recall Announced After Bacteria Found in Vick's Nasal Spray

Procter & Gamble is recalling Vicks Sinex nasal spray in the United States, Britain and Germany after finding it contained bacteria, the company said.

Procter & Gamble said it announced the voluntary recall after finding the bacteria in a small amount of product made at a plant in Germany.

There have been no reports of illness from the bacteria, but it could cause serious infections for people with weakened immune systems or those with chronic lung conditions such as cystic fibrosis, Procter & Gamble said late Thursday.

The bacteria poses little risk to healthy people, the company said.

Cincinnati, Ohio-based Procter & Gamble said it detected the problem during routine quality control at the plant. Analysis so far shows the problem is limited to a single batch of raw material mixture involving three lots of product, which were sold only in the three countries affected by the recall, the company said.

In the United States, the recalled product is Vicks Sinex Vapospray 12-hour Decongestant Ultra Fine Mist with lot number 9239028831.

In Britain, the company is recalling Vicks Sinex Micromist Aqueous Nasal Spray with lot number 9224028832.

In Germany, the recalled product is Wick Sinex Schnupfenspray Dosiersystem with lot number 9224028833.

All recalled products are in the 15-milliliter size.

Lot numbers are listed on the outer carton and the bottle, the company said.

Consumers with the product should discard it, and they may call the company for a replacement coupon or refund, the company said. More information is at the company's Web site, www.pg.com.
Originally posted at InjuryBoard by Rick Patterson

Cardiovascular Systems ViperSheath Sheath Introducer Recalled Due to Fracturing

Cardiovascular Systems, Inc. and FDA notified healthcare professionals of a nationwide recall of all lots of the ViperSheath Sheath Introducer on behalf of Thomas Medical due to reports about stretching or fracture of the sheath during use.

In the event of a device fracture, separated segments of the device may require unplanned open surgery to remove the retained segments or control bleeding. Since this device is coil reinforced, any separation of the cannula (a flexible tube inserted into the body) has the potential to expose portions of the coil, creating the potential for vessel dissection or perforation.

The recall encompasses products distributed from March 25, 2009 to October 21, 2009, and includes the following lot ranges and catalog numbers:

Lot range: S28117 through S29174

Catalog numbers: VPR-ISH 5 X 85, VPR-ISH 6 X 85, VPR-ISH 7 X 85, VPR-ISH 5 X 45, VPR-ISH 6 X 45, VPR-ISH 7 X 45

Hit-and-run Driver Faces Manslaughter Charges in Death of Disabled Man

A driver who hit a disabled man in Santa Ana will be facing vehicular manslaughter charges now that the victim has died.

Police said Fred Dole had helped a neighbor put up lights on Halloween at his home near Wellington Avenue and Lacy Street. Dole decided to get a better look at their work, so he wheeled himself across the street when a van slammed into him.

Witnesses said the driver stopped briefly and then took off.

Dole was severly injured and taken to a nearby hospital. The 62-year-old never regained consciousness and died this past weekend.

Originally posted at InjuryBoard by Rick Patterson
